The Direction of Growth
"Are your actions aligned with your values, or is there friction between them?"
Preferred orientation.
Crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) develops when grains rotate during deformation or selectively grow during recrystallization, producing a non-random distribution of lattice orientations. When measured, this texture gives the material anisotropic properties. The grains align their internal lattices in a specific direction. The material becomes stronger in that direction. What was random becomes coherent; what was isotropic becomes directed.
Turning toward the sun.
In the alchemical tradition, orientation toward the sun (Sol) represents the alignment of personal will with the transpersonal purpose of the Great Work. The will aligns with the work. No longer fighting oneself. Coherence. The Emerald Tablet speaks of this: "Its father is the Sun, its mother the Moon." When the alchemist's intention is fully aligned with the natural movement of transformation, the work proceeds with grace rather than force.
Alignment of will and action.
In Jungian psychology, the discovery of purpose reflects the ego's alignment with the Self โ what Jung called "vocation," the sense of being called to one's authentic life. What you do matches who you are. The internal friction disappears because all parts are moving the same way. This is not the ego's ambition but the Self's intention made conscious โ when persona, shadow, anima/animus, and ego all orient toward the same center.
