The driving force for recrystallization is the stored strain energy locked in the dislocation tangles and subgrain boundaries of the deformed material. This energy — measurable through maps of internal lattice distortion and diffraction techniques — is locked in the defect structure of every deformed grain. The energy stored in the defects of the old structure is the exact fuel needed to build the new one. Nothing from the deformation is wasted; it is all converted into the thermodynamic potential that powers new grain growth.

Suffering as fuel.

The alchemists understood that the fire which transforms is not only external — it also burns from within the matter itself. The heat of the process comes from within the substance itself. Nothing is wasted. This is the secret fire, the ignis innaturalis, which the Hermetic texts distinguish from ordinary flame. The suffering of the nigredo is not punishment but fuel; every degree of heat brings the substance closer to gold.

Converting pain into growth.

In the Jungian tradition, transformation is the conversion of psychic energy from a destructive to a creative expression — the alchemical turning of suffering into meaning. Your suffering is not just damage — it is unmetabolized energy. When meaning is found in the pain, the same force that was destroying you begins to rebuild you. Jung wrote that neurosis is "the suffering of a soul which has not discovered its meaning." When meaning is found, the same energy that fueled the neurosis now fuels individuation.
