The Interface
"Where do you need to draw a clear line between your past and your future?"
Interface between deformed and recrystallized.
The grain boundary migration front is the interface between the deformed parent grain and the growing recrystallized nucleus. Under high-resolution imaging, it appears as a rough, irregular frontier with local bulges and pinning points. The boundary moves as the new consumes the old, reducing total energy. The velocity of migration is proportional to the stored energy difference across the boundary โ the greater the disorder left behind, the faster the new order advances.
Separating the subtle from the gross.
Separatio is the alchemical art of discernment โ "separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, gently and with great ingenuity," as the Emerald Tablet instructs. Distinguishing the new consciousness from the old habits. A clear line is drawn. This operation requires the alchemist's most careful attention, for the boundary between what must be kept and what must be released is rarely obvious.
Distinguishing Self from Ego.
Differentiation is the Jungian process of distinguishing the Self from the ego โ learning to observe the psyche rather than being unconsciously driven by it. Realizing "I have a thought, but I am not my thought." The messy border between who you were and who you are becoming. This is the work of active imagination: standing at the boundary between conscious and unconscious, letting both sides speak without either one dominating.
