The Applied Stress

Force driving a system from steady state.

Differential stress — the force applied to a crystalline system that drives it away from steady state. In Earth's rocks, this is tectonic loading. In the lab, it's the pistons of a deformation apparatus compressing a rock cylinder. The stress doesn't ask permission. It doesn't care about the material's preferences. It simply is.

The application of fire.

The application of fire to the vessel. Calcinatio — the first heating. The alchemist deliberately introduces the force that will destroy the existing form. Without this fire, transformation is impossible.

External force the ego cannot accommodate.

The external disruption that the ego cannot accommodate. Job loss. Technological displacement. The moment when the world changes and your identity doesn't fit anymore. It can also be an internal disruption — the dream that won't stop appearing, the feeling that something is deeply wrong beneath the surface.
